KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE PRIZE...

The job market has been changing over the past month or so. My colleagues recruiting in the Banking/Finance sectors are hurting...very few new openings. Many "perm" new hires have been placed on hold until 2008 - 4 th quarter budgets have been spent - people are not leaving their current positions until they have received their year-end bonuses. However; my clients in the ADVERTISING - BEAUTY - MEDIA PLANNING - ENTERTAINMENT arena are still actively looking to meet/hire! This market is ideal for the candidate that is PASSIVELY looking. These are the people who are open to making a move - but are not desperate to leave. This time of year is ideal for getting "face time" with prospective employers. This way - when new budgets are in and they are ready to "pull the trigger", you will be first in mind to consider. It is important to clearly understand your motivation for making a career move. 99% of the candidates I meet are seeking an opportunity that will p

"IS IT BETTER TO BE FEARED OR LOVED?"

The title of this post is one of my favorite movie lines of all time from the movie "A Bronx Tale". I strive to have a healthy balance of both. I am feared by competitors...people who pretend to have strong contacts with the most prestigious employers in the country...people who pretend to have the best interests of their clients in mind...people who think recruiting is sending someones resume to 20 companies ...hoping to get a response. These are the " fugasi " recruiters who I beat out of commission on a daily basis. I am the Scott Boras of "Career Agents" - the Mike Jordan of this recruitment game...relationships with me result in opportunity, money & bright professional futures. I am loved by those exceptional candidates with whom I have a "partnership" with - and by HR executives and hiring managers who rely on my ability to identify & introduce ONLY candidates that are well suited for the position they are recruiting for & who

The Current Job Market...TRICK OR TREAT???

I cannot believe it is November already! I went to Europe for 2 weeks and so much has changed. California almost burnt down...The Red Sox won the World Series (HORRIBLE)...Joe Torre is no longer managing the Yankees (END OF THE DYNASTY ERA)...A-Rod is no longer a Yankee...and the number of new jobs has dropped dramatically. It appears that many of my clients did much of their hiring in the 2 nd & 3rd quarters of this year and have spent their budgets. This is not is to say that there are no new jobs available...however, the number has dropped by almost 50%. Generally, there is a "normal" slowing of new hires as we hit Thanksgiving to the New Year...but it appears to have begun a bit early this year. The positions I am tasked with recruiting for a very specific in the skill set & experience they are demanding. 90% of the positions I am currently working on are at a managerial level or higher. The number of Coordinator or Assistant roles currently open has taken the b

A GREAT ATTITUDE IS MORE VALUABLE THAN A GREAT RESUME!

The title is just a fancy way of stating how important both ATTITUDE and the manner in which you PRESENT yourself are in a successful interview. Regardless of whether your interview is with a recruiter or Human Resources; these two components play a major role in determining whether you will be introduced to key decision makers. Attitude... When someone that is vibrant, energetic, enthusiastic and friendly comes to see me; I feel more motivated to refer them to my clients. It is basic human nature. Energy and excitement are part of the "sales" process. They must be present to ensure success. Conversely, when someone comes to me and offers the "dead fish" handshake and makes me feel that they are "going through the motions", I am far less apt to introduce them to my client. It has been my experience that a terrific attitude can often make up for a lack of experience. However, a bad attitude can disqualify the most brilliant, experienced candidate. Bad attit

THE SEARCH CONTINUES...

Did anyone actually watch all of the MTV VMAs? That could have been the worst award show ever produced...but enough of that... Seasons may change...but the quest to find a new career remains constant. The need for me to introduce exceptional candidates to my clients has not changed either. The task of screening hundreds of average resumes/candidates to find the select few I choose to represent has become harder as well. Now that Labor Day has passed; clients and candidates are now stepping up their searches once again. Generally, the market remains active until Thanksgiving...and then drops off dramatically between Thanksgiving & the New Year. Below are some of our current HOT SPOTS : - SENIOR MANAGER, HUMAN RESOURCES - major global Advertising/Media Agency is actively seeking a seasoned HR professional to assume a dynamic GENERALIST role -person will spearhead ER, Performance, Planning initiatives - pays to 120K - ACCOUNT EXECUTIVES (all levels)- our clients are some of the most

SUMMER HEAT POWERS THE MAGNET...

The summer has been getting ridiculously hot...and that heat has made the placement activity at The Talent Magnet sizzle! Although there have been fewer new jobs coming in over the past few weeks - the opportunities presented have been fantastic & we managed to introduce 7 outstanding candidates to new employers in the past 3-4 weeks. Identifying exceptional candidates with experience in ADVERTISING (ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT/MEDIA PLANNING/INTERACTIVE PROJECT MANAGEMENT) and MARKETING (BEAUTY/COSMETICS/LUXURY/ENTERTAINMENT) continue to monopolize my recruitment efforts. I have also had the opportunity to assist some spectacular New Grads land their first job. Moving forward, I am on a mission to develop strong relationships and represent a new select group of candidates. If you are contemplating a career move and have at least a year of experience in ADVERTISING ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT or MEDIA PLANNING...I want to meet you!!! Currently, I am recruiting actively for 5 of the most prestigious

LIVE EARTH...THE TALENT MAGNET GOES GREEN

Image
I had the most amazing musical experience of my life...and managed to learn quite a bit at the same time. Let me preface this by stating that I am in no way a "crunchy" "tree-hugger" by any means...but I was deeply moved. On 7/7/07, I attended the Live earth concert held in Giants Stadium. The concert was held to promote awareness regarding many important topics including: Global Warming, Recycling, Protection of Natural Resources & Alternative Forms of Energy. It was frightening to hear the research and results as they related to the way we have caused incomprehensible damage to our own environment. There are many things anyone can do on a daily basis to contribute to preserving a healthy planet for generations to come. I recommend seeing Al Gore's documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" it is eye opening! The Talent Magnet is now looking into suppliers of recycled paper for resumes & any hard copy correspondence...as a small first step...but tha

PEOPLE SAY THE FUNNIEST #@$%...

I wanted to share with you a compilation of some of the amusing things I have heard in the past few months from both candidates and the people interviewing them. "I am a people person" - of course you are, otherwise you would be a Veterinarian or work in a Zoo. This is not a skill... "Many women are intimidated by my looks" - yes...I am certain that is exactly why you have been interviewing for 8 months with no offers...you are just too good looking... "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" - one of the dumbest/old school interview questions I still continue to hear. I think if I was interviewing, I might be tempted to say something silly like...Florida perhaps "My company is changing" - surprisingly, this is one of the more common reasons given for wanting to leave. What does this mean? It is usually difficult for those who say this to describe what they mean "I am excellent in interviews, I've had 13 in in the last month!" - th

MAKING MOVES LIKE MOISHE'S....

Finally, some warmer weather is here...the Yankees are WINNING...A-ROD is hitting...and The Magnet continues to place exceptional candidates with amazing companies. You may want to think of me as Ari from ENTOURAGE...I am that "type A" crazy Agent working behind the scenes to get my clients a great deal..in this case a new job & more money than they had been making. Since my last entry, I have placed over a dozen candidates in new careers!!! These positions varied greatly and included the following titles: Executive Assistant Marketing Coordinator Account Executive (Ad Agency) Media Planner Billing Coordinator Sales Assistant Marketing Manager (Beauty) Manager of Public Relations Financial Analyst Project Manager (Interactive Ad Agency) These candidates averaged a 9K increase in base salary & are in positions with companies that regularly promote from within. Our client roster is primarily composed of leaders in the worlds of Beauty/Cosmetics/Luxury & Advertising/

SALARIES AND BAD ATTITUDES ARE GROWING...

Wow...the job market sure has changed in the New Year! Now...candidates are scoffing at a 5-7K bump in pay...opting instead to hold out for the employer "BIDDER" that is going to give them at least 12K more than what they are currently making. Once again, Communications majors from state schools are commanding up to 40K...right out of school! OK, OK, OK...maybe I'm a bit jealous...since I was one of those SUNY grads back in the day. I was humble though. Even after I had some success and was making my 2nd job change, I communicated very differently than a growing number of the candidates I have been meeting recently. It's one thing to be confident & assertive...however, this robust economy & job market has spawned some "CANDIDATES FROM HELL". I sometimes feel as if they feel they are doing me a favor by interviewing with my Fortune 100 clients. Too many people presenting themselves with an overinflated sense of self value. These folks are forgetting h
