The Current Job Market...TRICK OR TREAT???

I cannot believe it is November already!

I went to Europe for 2 weeks and so much has changed. California almost burnt down...The Red Sox won the World Series (HORRIBLE)...Joe Torre is no longer managing the Yankees (END OF THE DYNASTY ERA)...A-Rod is no longer a Yankee...and the number of new jobs has dropped dramatically.

It appears that many of my clients did much of their hiring in the 2nd & 3rd quarters of this year and have spent their budgets. This is not is to say that there are no new jobs available...however, the number has dropped by almost 50%.

Generally, there is a "normal" slowing of new hires as we hit Thanksgiving to the New Year...but it appears to have begun a bit early this year. The positions I am tasked with recruiting for a very specific in the skill set & experience they are demanding. 90% of the positions I am currently working on are at a managerial level or higher. The number of Coordinator or Assistant roles currently open has taken the biggest hit.

Currently, I am engaged in several searches that are top priority for my clients. They are as follows:

- Manager, Human Resources - the most prestigious name in Beauty is actively looking for a dynamic HR professional with 5+ years of experience as a GENERALIST with heavy exposure to Recruitment. This spot is with a fantastic team working for an amazing Director. Salary to 85K.

- Account Executive - an award winning global Advertising agency is searching for an exceptional Account Executive to join a great team. The account is literally a "household name" in Consumer Packaged Goods. Need to have heavy TV production experience. Salary to 50K + I am offering a 2K sign-on bonus to be paid out of my fee!

- Marketing Manager - Beauty - international powerhouse in the Beauty industry has a need for a CREATIVE/STRATEGIC marketing pro to join one of their top brand teams. This position centers on contributing to the new PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT process - current trend analysis & basically being a source for innovation. This spot is F/T CONSULTING and will be paid based on an 85K annual salary!

The strategy would be for those currently in a full time job to use this time to get in front of HR & Hiring Managers...even if it is for an "exploratory" interview. This will ensure that when new budgets are in or people leave that company after getting their year-end bonus...you will be fresh in their memory. For those of you in between jobs - this is a great time to look into "CONSULTING or LONG TERM TEMPORARY opportunities in the industry you wish to pursue. Companies may still need the manpower - despite not having "headcount" to add permanent employees to their roster. This gives you an opportunity to "date" a new employer before "marrying" them.

In closing... remember to BRING YOUR "A" GAME - GET PEOPLE EXCITED ABOUT YOU - KNOW WHAT DISTINGUISHES YOU FROM YOUR COMPETITION AND...DON'T EAT YELLOW SNOW.
