For those of you who did not get the title of this entry...it is a reference to WYCLEF'S SONG "GONE TILL NOVEMBER"...

Now that I have provided you with today's music trivia - let's get to the real meaning...

For the past few months, we have seen a consistent slow down/decrease in the number of new full time career opportunities. Over the summer, Recruiters and Job -seekers alike were all saying "wait until September"...hoping that something may change and companies may go back to an ACTIVE hiring mode.

I am not a psychic...but I do not see things turning around all that fast. In fact, I have been encouraging New Grads & seasoned professionals alike to give serious consideration to TEMP & TEMP-TO-PERM opportunities. In a DOWN economy, companies tend to cut back on Full Time Permanent hires...especially through recruitment firms. However, they may still need the manpower to tend to day-to-day needs, projects, vacation coverage, maternity coverage, etc. These temporary assignments provide job seekers looking for full time employment (that are currently unemployed) to "DATE" a company - before "MARRYING" them. You often get valuable insight into what it is truly like to be a full time employee by temping. In addition, these assignments should be viewed as PAID INTERVIEWS. By physically being at a company...contributing on a daily basis - it is a fantastic way for you to demonstrate your value - create an impression & often motivate hiring managers to find some way to KEEP you!

Is it the fact that the Yankees are not winning...that many people are freaked out by McCain's VP selection, the high price of gas...the repeated rotation of the pop song "I kissed a girl"...maybe it's a combination of things that are causing unemployment to rise & companies to shy away from hiring full time permanent employees. It likely comes down to a decrease in consumer spending...resulting in many brands not reaching projected sales numbers. These sales numbers dictate budget...and ultimately any ability to add to head-count.

Despite the dreary ---sluggish job market - this is the time to pound the pavement. Even if you can get EXPLORATORY interviews...this is a good way to remain in the memory of HR & Hiring Managers...when they can pull the trigger.
