SEAN KOPPELMAN - CLOSING OUT THE YEAR STRONG!!!

This past year has been one of tremendous growth and change for The Talent Magnet. We moved locations, established a dozen NEW Client relationships, and added Jill Millman to our roster as a Recruitment Associate! Jill has strengthened our relationships with candidates at all levels. Her responsiveness, attention to detail, and genuine concern for her candidate's best interests have made her an invaluable asset! All of the the change has been very positive and has ultimately resulted in many successful placements. In fact, the last six weeks have been the busiest of the year, resulting in the successful placement of 9 exceptional candidates in new careers! When seeking out a charitable organization to support, I was introduced several years ago to The Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation! This organization has a fantastic mission...to put an end to Domestic Violence! They are spreading the word through various educational programs and by providing a SAFE environment for children who may be experiencing Domestic Violence to come to! To learn more about this wonderful organization and how you can assist them, I encourage all to visit http://www.joetorre.org For me this organization provides a way for me to contribute to a GREAT cause and...it does not hurt that the foundation was developed by NEW YORK YANKEE MANAGER, JOE TORRE AND HIS WIFE!!! ON A PERSONAL NOTE...A MUSICAL NOTE....

Most of you that visit my blog know that I generally discuss issues that relate to searching for jobs, interviewing, resumes, etc. In addition, I close out all my postings with a quote of some sort. The quotes usually come from a song that I identify with (usually something from a Rap, Hip-Hop or R & B artist). The truth is that my musical tastes are quite varied. My iPod has an eclectic inventory of Classic Rock, Pop, Reggae...along with my favorite Rap & Hip-Hop tunes. Music has always been an important part of my life. I find inspiration & peace from listening to lyrics & beats that move me. Although I never played an instrument...it has been a regret of mine that I did not have the ability to use music as another form of creative expression. I was always envious of the person that could sit down at a piano and bang out a tune or that I was not the guy grabbing my guitar and jamming with my frends. "ARE YOU BRINGING YOUR "A" GAME???"

The Yankees are in the post season...the Giants season has begun...and all seems right with the world...except the RESUME, ATTITUDE, INTERVIEW STYLE of many of the candidates I have been meeting. I believe that because of the robust economy and the volume of job openings listed on corporate websites and HotJobs, Careerbuilder, Monster & Craigslist...there seems to be a "laid back " approach by many jobseekers to their search. Do not be fooled into thinking that because there appears to be so many jobs out there... or the fact that you are getting many interviews, that either of these guarantee you landing a new position. You have to remember that you are continuing to compete with other jobseekers whose education, experience, interpersonal skills, resume structure are as good, if not better than your own!!! Let me begin by explaining that is entry is not disputing some Cosmo article and has nothing to do with sex... For the past several months, I have had occasion to place many entry level candidates and many people making their first or second job change. In 9 out of 10 conversations; the SIZE of the employer has become a primary focus. New graduates are being counseled by school "Career Counselors", Mom & Dad, friends to seek out a GIANT GLOBAL COMPANY THAT WILL HAVE A FORMAL TRAINING PROGRAM AND MANY LAYERS OF MANAGEMENT AND STRUCTURE. The Talent Magnet has been busy introducing some really exceptional candidates to the most sought after employers in NYC...and the country for that matter!!! The past few weeks our hard work has resulted in the successful match of more than a half dozen unique candidates with employers that are: in the industry they targeted, provided them with the title and scope of responsibility they desired and paid them an average of 10K more in base pay!!! SOME DOs & DON'Ts WHEN WORKING WITH RECRUITERS...

The following is for the benefit of those jobseekers that have truly never worked with a recruiter...and for those who like to "run game" on recruiters and pretend they have never used a recruitment service to find a job!!!! First, I'd like to share a bizarre, but extremely relevant story. A colleague of mine has "Jane" as a candidate. Jane is an accomplished Finance professional from the world of Advertising. She has a strong educational background, 2 jobs over a nine year period (STABLE!!!???) and has held progressive roles that suggest her abilities are extraordinary. BTW- The advertising industry is an industry that is dominated by recruiters! Meaning that perhaps 1/3 of the positions filled/openings above entry level are "called out" by agencies to recruiters Jane is in the industry 10 years and therefore you would assume is familiar with most things inherent to the business of advertising. Happy New Year to all of you!!!! This past year was a fantastic one for The Talent Magnet...and 2006 is shaping up to be even better!!!!
