KOPPELMAN...PRESIDENT OF THE TALENT MAGNET TO LAUNCH A BABY NURSE STAFFING FIRM IN 2009 CALLED CHARLEY'S CRADLE!

CHARLEY’S CRADLE – NEWBORN CARE SPECIALISTS “Providing unmatched care for your baby and peace of mind for you” Sean Koppelman began his career in Healthcare Staffing in 1992 and successfully launched and grew Healthcare divisions for several respected Recruitment firms in NYC. His demand for quality and reputation for excellence resulted in his partnering with the most prestigious Hospitals, Clinics, Nursing Homes, Private Practices and Home Health Care firms in the country. Mr. Koppelman was responsible for placing hundreds of Clinical professionals who raised the quality of care provided by these facilities. In October of 2008; Sean was blessed with the arrival of his first child – his son Max. In his attempt to retain the services of a “Baby Nurse” or “Newborn Care Specialist”; it became apparent that there were very few firms that could immediately introduce a qualified professional to help his wife and care for his baby. Currently, new parents are finding these people primarily

IS YOUR RESUME STRONG ENOUGH TO GET YOU "IN THE DOOR"?

New positions continue to be few and far between...I have been busy COLD CALLING select employers in an effort to market the candidates I am representing. This job market is the worst I have seen in my 16 years of recruiting. Worse than post 9/11...and looks like it will be slow moving until the 3rd quarter of 2009...according to most experts and many of my clients. Despite all the doom & gloom...this is NOT the time to slow your search. Many employers are open to seeing job seekers on an EXPLORATORY basis and companies are hiring more professionals on a consulting basis. This "face time" with an HR Executive or Hiring Manager is more valuable than ever! Getting the chance to sell yourself and leave a lasting impression is a great way to insure you are on the minds of people in a position to hire...when the market turns around. It is getting this "face time" that is the challenge. Before anyone meets you & is enamored with your professional repetoire...your

The JOE TORRE - SAFE AT HOME FOUNDATION..Sean Koppelman - The Talent Magnet supports a great charity & hangs with the BRONX BOMBERS!!!

Image
The Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation is an amazing charitable organization dedicated to providing resources to children who are victims of domestic violence. In addition to providing "safe havens" for children to come to and receive counseling and a safe physical space to spend time at...they are educating the general public about the horrors and prevalence of abuse in the home. This charity represents both an opportunity to support wonderful & important work as well as the chance of a lifetime for a lifelong New York Yankee fan to meet and spend time with their heroes. The foundation gala which is held annually (the past few years at Chelsea Piers) rewards supporters of the charity with an amazing evening hosted by Bob Costas, dozens of "A" list celebrities and honors past Yankee teams. This year the 98' World Series Championship team was reunited and honored. I had a chance to meet & speak with some of my heroes including: Don Mattingly, Joe Torre, Jo

The Talent Magnet is PROUD to announce the arrival of the latest member of the MAGNET team...MAX CHARLEY KOPPELMAN ...aka "MUSHY"

Despite the fact that the economy is the worst it's been since 9/11...despite the fact that the Yankees are not in the world series...despite the fact that it costs me $75 to fill my car with gas...despite the fact that very few of my Clients are hiring...I am the HAPPIEST I have ever been!!! The arrival of my Son Max has made all these challenges & stresses so much less important. In fact, if I did not ABSOLUTELY need to make money to pay my bills...I'd be at home with him everyday. The pure joy he has brought has put things into perspective. Suddenly, the job market (or lack there of) is less horrifying. It is amazing how Max has changed my priorities & perspective immediately!!! _________________________________________________________________ That being said, I have reluctantly returned to work - actively seeking out new career opportunities on behalf of the candidates I am representing! The job market/recruitment "slow down" began in March & has conti

GONE TILL NOVEMBER...GONE TILL NOVEMBER...YOUR NEW JOB MAY BE GONE TILL NOVEMBER...

For those of you who did not get the title of this entry...it is a reference to WYCLEF'S SONG "GONE TILL NOVEMBER"... Now that I have provided you with today's music trivia - let's get to the real meaning... For the past few months, we have seen a consistent slow down/decrease in the number of new full time career opportunities. Over the summer, Recruiters and Job -seekers alike were all saying "wait until September"...hoping that something may change and companies may go back to an ACTIVE hiring mode. I am not a psychic...but I do not see things turning around all that fast. In fact, I have been encouraging New Grads & seasoned professionals alike to give serious consideration to TEMP & TEMP-TO-PERM opportunities. In a DOWN economy, companies tend to cut back on Full Time Permanent hires...especially through recruitment firms. However, they may still need the manpower to tend to day-to-day needs, projects, vacation coverage, maternity coverage,

EVERYONE IS "WAITING FOR SEPTEMBER"...

Just checking back in with everyone to give a status update & my read on this very challenging market. The summer has proven to be the slowest hiring period seen by most in my industry since 2002-2003. Major corporations are still on "hiring freezes" or if they are hiring - it is strictly for consulting spots. Employers are not quick to replace full time staff that have quit or were terminated. This "slow-down" began in March with ONLY hopes that in September...things will begin to turn around. Many fiscal budgets are on a September 1 calender as opposed to a calendar year...interns are heading back to school & hiring managers will return from vacations...perhaps more dedicated to building their staff. Now is NOT necessarily the time to look to CHANGE career paths. In this tight economy, employers are demanding a very specific set of skills/education/experience. It is much tougher to convince prospective employers to PAY/INVEST in "potential" as op

THE TALENT MAGNET IS BACK!!!

Much like Amy Winehouse to REHAB, bell-bottom jeans, old-school Adidas , ATARI, like Michael Jordan wearing the 45, like over sized shirts with giant belts & leggings. like Jay-Z after retiring...I AM BACK!!! After a 2 week hiatus taken to be with my family after we were faced with a tragic loss...I have returned. My priority is and always will be family. I want to thank my clients and candidates for all their prayers and thoughts and for communicating directly in my absence. It sounds cliche, but it is true that a TRUE test of someones character is how they respond in the face of unthinkable challenge/difficulty. It is EASY to be GOOD...when times are good - but when an unexpected death strikes your family, coupled by a struggling economy, increasing expenses and countless other stressors ...it would have been very easy...to just close away from the responsibilities/obligations of "normal" life. Despite deep sadness & grieving - with the support & encouragemen

"STATE OF STATE OF THE JOB MARKET ADDRESS"

Just felt the need to chime in on the employment marketplace and give candidates my impression of what's been going on & my read on what to expect in the near future... Since my last entry, 3 of my largest clients have begun either an official or "unofficial" HIRING FREEZE. These companies are not adding to existing PERMANENT EMPLOYEE headcount unless someone quits or is fired. Last year at this time, these companies had me engaged in more than 20 simultaneous searches. Currently, I am working on 6 active searches on behalf of all 3. The trend seems to be heading in the direction of "CONTRACT" or "LONG-TERM TEMP" engagements. Employers still need the manpower - but are looking to project based engagements to PLUG/FILL the need for staff as opposed to permanent full time commitments. In this market...oddly enough...it is often advantageous to be "in between jobs" with the ability to "date" an employer without the promise of marr

THIS IS HOW THE MAGNET ROLLS

Image
Every once in a while, I like to share a little bit about what makes me tick... It is always wild when i meet candidates who were expecting to meet a very different person. People have a perception of my personality, what I look like & are often very surprised. It is curious & flattering that candidates I meet have as many questions about me as they do about the career opportunities I am presenting. To further "paint a picture" - I will tell you I am a hard-core life long fan of HIP-HOP & RAP music. It dates back to The Sugar Hill Gang, LL Cool J, RUN-DMC, Tribe Called Quest, The Beastie Boys and other pioneers. "I AM A KING LIKE CO-RETTA...COUNTIN MORE CHEDDAR" - LUDACRIS I always viewed the lyrics as poetry - set to amazing/driving beats...despite the fact that I am a white Jewish guy from Rockland County & could not necesarily relate to tales from the hood - I fell in love with the culture & remain a big fan. This is why it was such an amazing

REALITY CHECK TIME

The market continues to tighten and the number of new opportunities being called out for search are decreasing. This is due to HEADCOUNT - BUDGET ISSUES - NOT MEETING FORE CASTED GOALS & a host of other "stuff". HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT FACTS TO NOTE WHEN CONDUCTING YOUR SEARCH: - being a "people-person" is NOT a SKILL - PowerPoint is one word with 2 capital Ps - marketing/advertising/fashion/beauty/creative ARE NOT THE SAME JOB/CAREER CATEGORIES - asking for a minimum of a 15K increase in base pay - because your friends told you that is what the market is paying is NOT reasonable - you should ALWAYS be BETTER in person than your resume may even suggest - however, your resume should NOT be so BASIC that it discourages employers from inviting you in to interview - spelling/grammar & descriptive bullets NEED to motivate - telling a Recruiter that you DRESS BETTER - BRING A RESUME - Have A BETTER ATTITUDE when you are in a "REAL" interview is NOT the

CH-CH-CH CHANGES...

I have not posted in a while... and so many things have changed! Our Governor is banging hookers, Billy Crystal suited up for the day as a NY Yankee, Obama's spiritual advisor is a crazy person, cranes are falling out of the NYC sky...and employers have pulled back on NEW HIRES and are ramping up for HIRING FREEZES and more TEMP/CONSULTING gigs! Generally, the 1st quarter is busy...with new jobs, lots of interviews, offers for 10-15K more than what my candidates had been earning...however, the market is moving as slowly as my grandma in a walker in the nursing home! Unfortunately, several interviews that began in January are still dragging on. Budget issues, executive travel schedules, "HEAD-COUNT", and political BS has caused a general slowing in the interview/hiring process. Candidates need to be aware that the number of new jobs has been reduced and the opportunity to DEMAND 10-15K more than what you are earning is fading. People who are serious about making a career

THEY SAID WHAT???

There are some very common things I hear from candidates ...then there are those things that people say that make me scratch my head & say ----did I just hear what i thought I heard? COMMON THINGS I HEAR MANY CANDIDATES TELL ME IN AN INTERVIEW: - I am a people person -of course you are, otherwise you would be a veteranarian & working with animals - being a "people person" is not a skill - even the IT guy who looks like a serial murderer at your company thinks he is a "people person" - I am excellent in interviews - I've had like 20 - the fact that you have had 20 interviews and have not yet been extended an offer should be a clear indication that you are NOT as strong an interviewer as you may think - generally, very good interviews result in offers - I would act differently in a "REAL" interview - candidates often mistake the fact that their interview with me is NOT REAL - I assume the way someone acts in their interview with me is the way the

THANKS...BUT NO THANKS

Imagine that you have been actively interviewing for months...you finally get an interview with THE company you want to work for...you make it through 1st, 2 nd , 3rd round interviews...and you just came back from a FINAL interview that was fantastic...you are told you are the company's number 1 choice...you are psyched...and as soon as you get out of the interview, you want to get off a THANK YOU to the interviewer... All sounds great to this point...however in your excitement, you hurriedly bang out a quick THANK YOU on your BLACKBERRY. Instead of sending a thoughtful well written note expressing your appreciation & desire to work for this "dream" employer...you send something like this.. "i wanteed to thnk you for taking thee time to meetme & look frward to next steps" Now...if you got a TEXT from your friend like this - it's cool...understandable However, a prospective employer views this communication as a tremendous error in judgement, a r
