REALITY CHECK TIME

The market continues to tighten and the number of new opportunities being called out for search are decreasing. This is due to HEADCOUNT - BUDGET ISSUES - NOT MEETING FORE CASTED GOALS & a host of other "stuff".


HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT FACTS TO NOTE WHEN CONDUCTING YOUR SEARCH:

- being a "people-person" is NOT a SKILL
- PowerPoint is one word with 2 capital Ps
- marketing/advertising/fashion/beauty/creative ARE NOT THE SAME JOB/CAREER CATEGORIES
- asking for a minimum of a 15K increase in base pay - because your friends told you that is what the market is paying is NOT reasonable
- you should ALWAYS be BETTER in person than your resume may even suggest - however, your resume should NOT be so BASIC that it discourages employers from inviting you in to interview - spelling/grammar & descriptive bullets NEED to motivate
- telling a Recruiter that you DRESS BETTER - BRING A RESUME - Have A BETTER ATTITUDE when you are in a "REAL" interview is NOT the way to motivate your "CAREER AGENT" to hustle on your behalf
- being available ONLY BEFORE or AFTER work hours M-F is NOT being flexible
- NOT accepting an interview with a prospective employer because you heard "BAD THINGS" about them is like NOT tasting pizza EVER because your friends said it does not taste good
- "FEEDBACK" from employers is RARELY informative - useful or given in a timely manner
- CALLING the recruiter you are working with immediately following the interview they have arranged for you - should not be considered a COURTESY you are extending the recruiter - but instead essential to your interview process
- making a career move every 12-18 months since your graduation may not be viewed as a reflection of your MOTIVATION - but instead a reflection of your boredom in the role & lack of commitment - be prepared to ADDRESS multiple job changes
- out of state candidates should use a LOCAL NYC area address when applying for jobs - this does NOT apply to NY, CT, NJ folks - being LOCAL - READY/AVAILABLE to interview/work is a factor employers consider
