The job market has been changing over the past month or so. My colleagues recruiting in the Banking/Finance sectors are hurting...very few new openings. Many "perm" new hires have been placed on hold until 2008 - 4th quarter budgets have been spent - people are not leaving their current positions until they have received their year-end bonuses.
However; my clients in the ADVERTISING - BEAUTY - MEDIA PLANNING - ENTERTAINMENT arena are still actively looking to meet/hire! This market is ideal for the candidate that is PASSIVELY looking. These are the people who are open to making a move - but are not desperate to leave. This time of year is ideal for getting "face time" with prospective employers. This way - when new budgets are in and they are ready to "pull the trigger", you will be first in mind to consider.
It is important to clearly understand your motivation for making a career move. 99% of the candidates I meet are seeking an opportunity that will provide GROWTH - make them feel CHALLENGED - to work for/with people whose company they enjoy & whose experience they feel will contribute to their personal development. MONEY...tends to be lower on the list of what is TRULY motivating the move.
Recently, I have seen too many candidates that have been active in their search - end up accepting positions based primarily on money. These are generally the people who will be calling me in 6 months - a year looking again. It is essential to feel you are being compensated fairly/competitively for the work you do. However, WANTING TO GET UP & GO TO WORK EVERYDAY IS PRICELESS. Do not lose sight of the things you are looking to move away from - simply for the prospect of earning more money.
It is much smarter to accept an offer for a role that provides a HEALTHY/FUN/GROWTH ORIENTED environment for 5K more than what you are currently earning - rather than being enticed to accept a position that is NOT exactly what you are looking for offering 10K more than what you are currently making.
