IT'S HOLIDAY SEASON...SHOULD I STOP LOOKING?

The year continues to fly by and we have moved into the final stretch for fourth quarter!

Many candidates frequently ask about the status of their search and how many viable openings exist? Traditionally, from Thanksgiving to the New Year, the number of NEW opportunities decreases dramatically.

Many companies have spent their 2005 budget and place hiring needs "on hold". You will hear HR tell you that they "don't have the headcount" or there is a "freeze" at the moment. This is a result of both financial and organizational structure. Companies function just like people do at this time of year. They reflect on the past year - take inventory of where they are at - look at short term & long term goals - and look to put a plan in place for growth and success in the coming year.

This lull does not mean that you as a jobseeker should take a vacation from looking! Instead, you may need to alter your short term goal from landing a new job in a few weeks to opening a dialogue with a prospective employer and networking. By establishing contact and generating interest, you will place yourself at the forefront of their memory when they are ready to move forward.

Keeping this in mind, there are still many interviews taking place and companies looking to fill openings before the year ends.

However, many have been open for a while - many are LONG...DRAWN OUT interview processes & some are nearly impossible to fill. The ones that are next to impossible tend to have 2 common themes; 1 - AN UNREALISTIC SET OF QUALIFICATIONS 2- A COMPENSATION PACKAGE THAT IS NOT COMPETITIVE. So, of the 50 openings...perhaps 10 are "fillable" positions.

This will change as we move into the middle of January. Competition and a need to fill the position will dictate that an organization need to re-evaluate their job description/requirements and adjust compensation.
