SEARCHING FOR A NEW JOB IN NYC...

JOBS...JOBS...JOBS...

So... you have decided that you have waited long enough to make your move! You have not had a raise since 2001 and you have watched many of your peers get their walking papers! Now, you feel comfortable exploring other options and realizing your market value!

Great!!! Where do you start? Many of the most sought after jobs are not easily found by the average job seeker. Despite corporate websites that list openings and all of the job posting/resume posting sites....it still takes a human being to express enough interest to invite you for an interview! Personal referrals are and always will be the best means of introducing yourself to a new opportunity. If you are not lucky enough to have a friend who knows a guy that once worked with the Chairman of your "Dream Company", than you have to be resourceful!

You must know that regardless of your profession; when you are conducting a job search, you are a SALES/MARKETING professional! After you have determined the TITLE, INDUSTRY and ORGANIZATION you are gunning for...you need a plan that will make those people in a position to hire...want to see you! You must come up with a resume that is fluid and easily adaptable to each position you apply for..(without fabricating). This means that if you are a fruit salesperson...you should not be selling your fruit to the "Meat Lovers of America Company"!!! Make sure you are promoting a skill set that is accurate and addresses as many of the specs in the job posting as possible! Now that you know where you want to apply and you are fairly satisfied that you've got a solid resume...How do you get in front of THEM????

In NYC, the majority of Human Resource Departments and Hiring Managers depend on being introduced to their next employee by a professional Recruiter!!! For C-level executives, these would be firms that are on "retainer" by an employer. CEOs, Presidents, and COOs may be introduced by these types of firms. For the rest of you, there exists a sea of AGENCIES, RECRUITMENT FIRMS, STAFFING COMPANIES...HEADHUNTERS to choose from!

Choosing the most appropriate representation in your job search is no different than a professional athelete or entertainer choosing an Agent! You must research their backgrounds, areas of expertise, client list and titles they most often place. Having a relationship with a Recruiter with direct connections to the type of jobs you want is invaluable!

However, finding one that will invest time, hear your concerns and respects your wishes is not that easy! A good recruiter will closely examine your resume, screen you over the phone and subsequently invite you in for an interview. Once in the office...try to get a "read" on the type of candidates they work with, how you are greeted, professionalism exhibited, etc. A good recruiter will conduct a thorough interview ( not a 5 minute...thanks very much I'll be in touch one!). Be prepared to answer why you are leaving your current job (or why you left your previous positions), your salary history, ability to handle multiple tasks, pace of work, hours you are available, etc. This is all valuable information they will need to get to determine what position is best and evaluate your communication skills at the same time.

Do not make the mistake of treating your interview with a Recruiter as any less important than a meeting with Human Resources. They need to be impressed and excited to introduce you to their clients...remember, until you get an offer you are selling! Honesty and maintaining open lines of communication are paramount to the success of this relationship! They should prepare you for success in your interview process by sharing "key" motivating factors to making their decision of who to hire!

There are many more opportunities out there this year than there were last year! Get yourself an Agent (Recruiter) to simplify your job search and increase your chances of securing an interview and perhaps your "Dream Job"!

PLEASE SHARE YOUR JOB SEARCH/HIRING EXPERIENCES.....BEST OF LUCK IN THE NEW YEAR!!!!
