ARE EMPLOYERS HIRING...OR JUST "WINDOW SHOPPING" TALENT?

So...there are many reasons to feel HAPPY...or at least HAPPIER at this moment then perhaps a few months ago.

The Yankees are playing & WINNING, the weather has been HOT (making it great for the pool, beach, summer shares, etc.), the BP oil leak seems to be clogged finally and...oh yeah...

THERE ARE ACTUALLY NEW JOBS BEING LISTED REGULARLY!!!!

Never in my life have I had so much empathy for all the wonderful candidates who were downsized, had some family emergency and had to leave their job or for the ones stuck in a position they were miserable in...and just had no options.

If the past 2 months are any indication; we can begin to....I said begin to...breathe a sigh of relief!

Now the key is to understand which employers are "CHECKING OUT THE TALENT POOL" and which employers are serious about adding to their staff.

Many employers are making a mistake by getting candidates (AND RECRUITERS :)) excited about openings...only to put people through several rounds of interviews....with 50 different people....over a 5-6 week period....only to inform the candidate (AND RECRUITER) that they are either PUTTING THE JOB ON HOLD, HAVE SOME INTERNAL REFERRALS TO CONSIDER, TRYING HARD TO GET THE SPOT APPROVED, or some other BS that all translates to:

WE WASTED YOUR TIME BECAUSE WE REALLY NEVER HAD ANY INTENTION OF HIRING YOU...OR NEVER REALLY HAD ALL THE BUDGET TO HIRE YOU...OR WE ALL THOUGHT YOU WERE SO NICE AND WANTED TO MAKE SURE EVERYONE MET YOU --- SO THAT WHEN A REAL JOB OPENS UP - "YOU WILL BE AT THE TOP OF OUR LIST!"

Now understand; I am a HUGE FAN of EXPLORATORY or INFORMATIONAL interviews. However, it is important that all involved understand the EXPLORATORY nature of the interview.

Employers will be in for a big surprise if the economy truly continues to stabilize and grow! This is because they have been in the "driver's seat" for over 2 years. During this DARK ECONOMIC PERIOD; employers reduced salaries, downsized staff, reduced support resources and did not pay attention to MORALE. What were the employees going to do? There were no other jobs to go to.......UNTIL NOW! So, for the first time in nearly 2 years - employers will not only be adding to staff voluntarily - they will have to replace a tremendous number of UNHAPPY employees who are making a move.

Already...for the first time in a long time - employers who snooze....lose the candidate to a competing company!


So...I am a happy camper - because I am getting the NEW ADDITION TO STAFF/HEADCOUNT to recruit for....as well as the calls from my EXPERIENCED ALL STAR CANDIDATES now ready to make the move they put off for 2 years!

This horrific economy has changed the perception of many companies. No longer can you assume that a bigger company is more stable. As evidenced by the hundreds of employees downsized by some of the biggest companies in the country.

These past two years - as rough as they have been - have been eye opening for many of us. For the first time in many of our professional lives - our best efforts did not land us a job or "make that sale". We learned that we had no control over the economy, the failing healthcare system, the troubled banking industry...and had to TOUGH IT OUT...to get to a point where there may be OPPORTUNITY. Some folks moved to a new city, while others changed professions...and still those lucky few took this time to do things that really meant something to them. It tested our faith and reminded many of us that NOTHING IS PERMANENT.

That all being said...I have seen a dramatic increase in the number of searches I have been asked to conduct in the past few weeks. I have new jobs from ADVERTISING, ENTERTAINMENT, MEDIA, and BEAUTY companies. All industries that were hit pretty hard......now beginning to grow again!

Everyone is saying that after Labor day it will be very busy. So...we wait to see if this is a flash in the pan or finally some true sign of economic recovery - STAY TUNED!
