ARE YOU REALLY A "PEOPLE PERSON"?
I find it so annoying that candidates point to being a "people person" as if it is a skill that makes them somehow unique!
Of course you are a "people person" or you would have pursued Veterinary Medicine or Zoology!!
But are you really a people person? Do you enjoy constant interaction with a diverse group of people? Do you accept constructive criticism? Do you ask questions when you do not understand something? Are you "service oriented"? Are you a "team player"? Do you like solving other people's problems? Are you accepting of other's limitations?
The questions above all relate to the scope of your interpersonal skills. The manner in which you answer (if you answer honestly) will give you greater insight into your PEOPLE SKILLS! To be successful...truly successful in a position that requires heavy interaction, you need to be responding in the affirmative on all! OK...you may achieve success but you will not be happy!
When making your career move, you need to closely examine a wide array of "Happiness Factors"! These should include: Is this position in an industry/field I truly have a passion for? Why do I dislike my current or previous workplace? How will this position contribute to my personal/professional development? How would I like to communicate with superiors and co-workers? What is the social climate?
These questions are as important as salary, benefits and job description!
You need to identify real skills and "added value" that you bring to an employer! This is what a prospective employer is buying. The package that is you is important to define and market effectively!
Everyone believes they are a "people person"! Even the IT dude who rarely looks up from his monitor considers himself one! Get a new "line"...a new motto or phrase that truly may distinguish you from your competition! For example "What sets me apart is...a dedication to being proactive. By anticipating future needs or problems, I can take decisive action that usually saves time and money for my employer."
Always bring: high energy, a smile, contagious enthusiasm and thoughtful, unique responses to your interview!
